Some terminology explained ...
- Wikipedia Glossary of contract bridge terms is applicable, especially as Nash Whist is intended to also encourage the playing of Bridge.

- Declarer : The player that wins the bidding phase for this game. This person tries to "make" the bid quantity of tricks.
- Defence : The team of players that collaborate to prevent the declarer from making their bid number of tricks. They also defend the centre pot.
- Game : Deal, bid, and play a hand of cards. Each game takes approximately 5 minutes.
- Round : A round of bidding. Each round of dealing. Another round of games (around the table and back to the same seat).
- Pot : A container on the table that has been accumulating chips. For each game each player adds one chip. When next a declarer succeeds to win their bid, they receive this pot as well as their payment for the other players. Pop-and-Cop does not receive the pot.
- Prop-and-Cop : Proposal and Co-operate. This is a lower bid than the Solo (Five-in) bid. You cannot quite bid Solo, so you Propose and seek a partner to make eight tricks as a duo partnership. See further explanation.
- Renege : Each player must "follow suit" if possible. So if you hold a card in the suit that has been led, then it must be played. To "renege" is to illegally play another suit, when you should have followed suit. Of course if you surely do not hold any futher cards in the led suit, then you can either discard or play a trump card. Learn how to sort and hold a hand of cards, so that none are hidden by accident.
- Solo : The specific bid of Five tricks in the initial turned-up suit (Five-in). This is the lowest bid for going on your own. It is only in the initial trump suit. The next highest bid is Six in any other suit (e.g. Six-out Spades).
